International Association of Multilingualism
Pilar Safont elected vice-president of the International Association of Multilingualism. In elections held at the 10th international conference on multilingualism and third language acquisition which took place at the University of Vienna at the beginning of September, Dr. Safont was elected vice-president of the International Association of Multilingualism. Dr. Safont has held the position of secretary of the association since 2014. She will be working alongside new president, Dr. Jean-Marc Dewaele, to further increase the international presitge and visibility of the association.

Espai Menut
Researchers from LAELA are collaborating with the online magazine Espai Menut to produce informational articles aimed at parents which explain aspects related to early language development and learning English as an L3. The articles are published in Spanish and Catalan.

Santander Prize for LAELA
The LAELA Research Group were awarded the Santander Bank’s prize for scientific outreach. The prize was awarded on the grounds of ‘capacity to communicate scientific content’ and the ‘value of the research to the wider society’. The photograph shows group leader, Dr. Eva Alcón, accepting the award.

To analyse the development of the communicative competence in English language learners, with a special focus on pragmatic competence.

To investigate the effect of different particular variables on English language acquisition, such as, bilingualism, motivation, gender, instructional context, and so on.
